Free printable potty training chart

A potty training chart shows the steps of using the potty in pictures, with spaces for a sticker each time, so every try is something to celebrate.

Make a potty chart

Free to make and print. No signup.

An example. Every word, picture and color can be changed.

How to make one

  1. Add your child's name so the chart is theirs.
  2. Check the potty steps. Change the words to the ones your family uses.
  3. Choose how many sticker spaces to fill and write a reward if you use one.
  4. Print it and put it up in the bathroom at a height your child can reach.

Use your family's words

Every family has its own words for the potty and what happens there. The chart works best when it says what you say, so change the steps to match.

Celebrate the try

Many parents give a sticker for sitting on the potty, not only for success, especially at the start. It keeps the chart about trying, which is the part a child can control.

Accidents are part of it

Most children have accidents while they learn. Leaving the chart for good moments only, rather than marking accidents on it, keeps it something your child is happy to look at.

If you have questions about whether your child is ready, or about anything that worries you, your child's doctor is the person to ask.

By age

Ages 2 to 4
The usual age for potty charts. Picture steps, a short row of spaces and a reward that comes soon.
Ages 5 to 7
Helpful for a child still learning to go without being reminded. A longer row of spaces suits them.
Ages 8 to 12
Rarely needed at this age. If your child is still learning or has had a setback, have a word with their doctor; a chart of their own can help too.

Questions parents ask

When should we start potty training?

Children are ready at different ages. If you aren't sure, your child's doctor can help you decide.

What reward should go on a potty chart?

Something small and soon works well for young children: a special story, a trip to the park or a call to show a grandparent the full chart.

How many sticker spaces should it have?

Fewer spaces for a first chart, so the reward isn't too far away. When it is full, print another.

Is it free?

Yes. Making and printing a potty training chart is free and needs no account.
